In this inspirational post, we will talk about the Life of an Expat and what are some of the surprises people experience in a new country.

The expatriate life can be glamorous! Often thought of as a great adventure, being an expat in a foreign country can be exciting and immensely enriching. However, whether the purpose is for work, or to simply explore the world, there are going to be a lot of things that are very different than what you are used to at home. Some of the crucial questions one should consider before setting out include:

• Where will you live?

• Will you need a visa?

• How easily can you communicate, learn the language, and adapt to the culture?

• How will you manage your finances? What are common problems for expats?

• How can you make the most of this opportunity?

This post will be primarily about the initial stages of becoming an expat.

Regarding housing, you must be adaptable and OK with living out of your suitcase- at least until you find a more permanent residence. Do try to research what housing includes at your destination, what it will cost, and what is required to secure housing. Even if your new employer gives you a housing allowance, will you need 3 months deposit out of pocket first? How will your landlord expect to be paid? What documentation will be required for your employer to reimburse you? Some countries require you to register your address within a certain timeline.

If you are moving abroad with a company then you may be granted a working visa, but if not be sure to research the terms and conditions of getting a visa in your country of interest. Even the most common jobs such as teaching English require a work permit and visa, and some countries even require a degree to do so.

Each country has their own ways of doing things and culture shock is a real thing. Learn and respect their culture and keep an open mind. If you don’t speak the language, learning the basics will help – and please be open minded about the local culture and ways. Remember, you are a guest in their country. Any attempts to adapt will be appreciated and possibly gain you some new friends. And even before you learn the language, knowing how much the locals understand your language will make a big difference in your experience. Many expats are surprised to learn that people in many places don’t even know the English words ‘yes’ and ‘no’.

For expats, your alternative world views, experience, and your skills can be very valuable. Once you have an income, what is required to open a bank account? If you are planning to be in your destination country temporarily, what are the restrictions on taking your money out of the country? Even countries like Thailand have restrictions on opening accounts and on sending money out of the country. Beyond that, what’s your monthly budget? Do you have an emergency fund? A common problem with most expat compensation packages is they don’t include retirement plans. Are you putting money away for your future?

Ultimately, the key to a successful experience abroad is to be as prepared and as planned as possible prior to your trip’s departure. Be open-minded and willing to learn new traditions, customs, and culture. Once you are in your destination country, make new friends.
